Planning Ahead – And Why Waiting for a Crisis Isn’t Worth the Risk
Australia’s ageing population is growing rapidly, and with it comes an increasing need for aged care and support services. Whether that means staying at home with assistance or transitioning to residential care, the numbers tell us one thing clearly: more of us will need some level of help as we grow older.
Recent figures show:
- 275,000 Australians now receive Home Care Packages—a 300% increase in the past seven years.
- Nearly 200,000 people live permanently in residential aged care, with women making up two-thirds of residents.
- Yet fewer than 1 in 4 older Australians have made meaningful plans for how they’ll manage this stage of life.
This lack of planning doesn’t just affect older adults—it has a ripple effect on their children and grandchildren, often forcing them into high-stakes decision-making at critical moments.
🌱 It’s About More Than Aged Care. It’s About Life Planning.
At New Way to Stay, we’ve learned that planning isn’t just for those at the doorstep of aged care. It’s equally valuable for active retirees who are enjoying their independence now but want to prepare for the “what ifs” in life.
We call what we do Life Planning because it goes far beyond care. It’s about helping families:
✅ anticipate risks,
✅ align goals between generations, and
✅ create a roadmap that adapts as life changes.
Our process starts by working closely with you to co-produce a clear and detailed plan that highlights risks and options, weighs the pros and cons of each, and aligns with your family’s values and goals. These plans are designed to be easy to understand, practical to implement, and flexible enough to evolve as circumstances change.
🔗 Ongoing Advocacy Services
For many families, this is only the beginning. Life isn’t static—and neither are care needs. That’s why we offer ongoing advocacy services, staying by your side to:
✔️ Keep the plan active and evolving as health, lifestyle or financial situations shift.
✔️ Coordinate the moving parts across care providers, legal and financial professionals, and family members.
✔️ Support informed decision-making at every stage, giving families confidence that nothing is overlooked.
We provide calm, structured oversight so families can focus on their loved one, rather than scrambling to navigate an unfamiliar system alone.
👥 Why We’re Different – And Why It Works
Between us, we bring decades of senior-level experience:
- Louise has over 25 years in health care, working with senior clinicians and hospital teams in leadership and project management roles across large and diverse organisations. For the past decade, she has led New Way to Stay, guiding families through the complexities of later-life planning with professionalism and attention to detail.
- Les spent 30 years in senior leadership roles in financial services, including CEO positions where he oversaw large-scale organisational change and compliance frameworks for hundreds of financial planners nationwide. For the past seven years, he has also been a director in New Way to Stay, applying his expertise in managing complexity and risk to family-focused planning.
Together, we combine the advanced project management skills needed to coordinate health, financial, legal, and lifestyle considerations into a seamless plan. And we do it with the empathy of people who have supported our own parents through life’s later stages.
